Monoslope Truss Buyer’s Guide

A practical overview from Blackwater Truss Systems

What Is a Monoslope Truss?

A monoslope truss creates a single-slope roof system that is taller on one side and slopes continuously to the other. Unlike a lean-to, which attaches to the side of an existing building, a monoslope is a standalone structure with overhang on both sides, giving it balance and functionality similar to a gable, but with one continuous slope.

Applications Best Suited for Monoslope Trusses

  • Open-front hay and equipment storage

  • Livestock shelters and loafing sheds

  • Commodity sheds

  • Buildings requiring all drainage to one side

  • Modern-style shops or barns where a unique roofline is desired

Key Features of Monoslope Trusses

  • Provides a clean, modern appearance with one-direction slope.

  • Overhang on both sides sets it apart from a lean-to, which only ties into an existing wall.

  • Useful for controlling water and snow drainage to a single side of the structure.

  • Works well for open or partially enclosed designs.

Standard Pitch and Custom Options

  • Blackwater’s standard monoslope trusses are designed at a 1.5/12 pitch.

  • All prices listed on our website represent this standard 1.5/12 pitch.

  • Any pitch other than 1.5/12 is considered custom, and customers should call us for a quote before ordering.

Inside Measurements

Monoslope trusses are designed to fit between posts like a gable truss. This means the inside measurement is always slightly less than the nominal truss span:

  • A 40' monoslope truss provides an inside measurement of 39'1".

  • A 24' monoslope truss provides an inside measurement of 23'1".

In general: To calculate the inside measurement, subtract 5.5 inches from the nominal span of the truss.

Why Choose a Monoslope Truss

  • Directional drainage: Perfect for sites where water and snow must be shed to one side only.

  • Balanced design: Overhangs on both sides provide better coverage and protection than a lean-to.

  • Modern look: Offers a sleek, practical roofline for barns, shops, and shelters.

  • Engineered strength: Designed and fabricated to meet your span, load, and code requirements.

Blackwater Truss Systems builds monoslope trusses to the same high standards as our gable and lean-to systems, providing durability, reliability, and performance for your building project.
