Lean-to buyer's guide

A practical overview from Blackwater Truss Systems

What Is a Lean-To Truss?

A lean-to truss creates a single-slope roof extension that attaches to the side of an existing structure. This design is one of the most cost-effective ways to expand usable space without constructing a brand-new building.

Applications Best Suited for Lean-To Trusses

- Adding covered space onto barns, shops, or garages

- Equipment storage extensions

- Livestock loafing sheds or covered pens

- Cost-conscious expansions where a full new structure isn’t needed

Key Features of Lean-To Trusses

- Designed to tie into the wall of an existing building, creating a seamless roof extension.

- Provides a simple, affordable way to add functionality to your structure.

- Effective for creating shaded or protected work areas.

- Customizable spans and roof pitches available to fit the host structure.

Standard Pitch and Custom Options

- Blackwater’s standard lean-to trusses are designed at a 1.5/12 pitch.

- All prices listed on our website represent this standard 1.5/12 pitch.

- Any pitch other than 1.5/12 is considered custom, and customers should call us for a quote before ordering.

Inside Measurements

Like gable trusses, lean-to trusses are designed to fit between posts. This slightly reduces the clear inside measurement compared to the nominal truss size:

- A 20' lean-to truss provides an inside measurement of 19' 6.5".

- A 16' lean-to truss provides an inside measurement of 15' 6.5".

In general: To calculate the inside measurement, subtract 5.5 inches from the nominal span of the truss.

Why Choose a Lean-To Truss

- Affordable expansion: Gain additional space at a fraction of the cost of building new.

- Flexible use: Great for storage, sheltering livestock, or providing work cover.

- Seamless integration: Attaches directly to an existing building for a clean, functional look.

- Efficient engineering: Designed to work with your building’s specifications and loads.

Blackwater Truss Systems fabricates lean-to trusses with the same engineering standards and durability as our gable and monoslope options, ensuring long-lasting performance and value.
